Discovered 1992 Mar. 1 by C.-I. Lagerkvist at the European Southern Observatory in the course of the Uppsala-ESO Survey of Asteroids and Comets.
Named after two small counties, Fide and Öja, on the island Gotland. The church in Öja hosts a very famous crucifix from the 13th century.
