4°x 4° image of the Fornax dSph fieldIn 1938 Harlow Shapley discovered the first dwarf spheroidal galaxy in the constellation Sculptor, and some months later the second, in Fornax. He discovered Sculptor on routine photographic plates taken with the HCO Southern Station 24 inch reflector. The field of view was, as on the image from the Digital Sky Survey, 4 x 4 degrees. Wide-field plates from telescopes of larger apertures, available some years earlier, were neccesary tools for detecting these low surface brightness galaxies. (He thought, at first, that Sculptor was a "darkroom accident") Back |
